The exemplum, one of the tools of persuasion indicated by ancient rhetoric, is used by Cicero in Caesarian Orations with a careful strategy: the exemplary modeling of Caesar allows to define the boundaries of the correct management of res publica. Therefore, in the Pro Marcello Caesar is already presented as a “visible” exemplum, while in the following Pro Ligario the paradigm of Sulla (i.e. that of a dictator guided by crudelitas) becomes effective in admonishing Caesar from a possible degeneration of power.

Libanius’ Julianic orations play an important role to move closer to knowledge of the interior portrait of this emperor. Julian’s personality is based on four virtues: philoponia, phronesis, philanthropia, sophrosyne. These virtues are panegyrical topoi in the eulogy of the rulers (Basilikos logos), and in the Libanian context they are freely reused, adapted to the present in order to return an image of Julian politically useful; all this doesn’t necessarily imply systematic distortion of the truth. In questo articolo vengono esaminati alcuni aspetti peculiari del magico (γοητεία), del soprannaturale (τέρας), del meraviglioso (θαυμαστός) e del paradossale (παράδοξον) nelle Orazioni 4, 7, 11, 16 e 29 di Temistio. La rappresentazione allusiva dei prodigia è fortemente influenzata dalla tradizione letteraria nota all’autore, ma la loro dimensione metaforica consente di trattarli come exempla adatti a favorire la riflessione politica e morale sul tema dell’optimus princeps.
